What a way to end the week...

We had a busy day at the office, but the real "action" was out on the highway that runs past our office. Evidently a domestic dispute between a husband and wife from Chatham county ended up with shots being fired into her car and him dying in a car crash! By all reports there may have been a genuine shootout involved. The CSIs and all manner of investigators were on the scene. And here I thought we lived in this quiet little bedroom community! Ha! Little ole Apex PD couldn't handle the traffic tie up and didn't call on either the Sheriff's dept or the SHP for traffic control and so when lunch time came, I had to take back roads through the "country" to get to Cary for a birthday lunch for the Executive Director of the NCVMA, Claire Holley, who's a friend of ours. It was lovely lunch, but even having left in time to make it back to the office by 2 pm I finally got there at 2:45 due to the terrible traffic tie up and no one directing traffic, just allowing the usual traffic lights to do their thing!!!

I hope the midwestern weather has moderated...our "cold" weather has returned and we're still looking for some more 60's by the end of the weekend...who knows!?! It was 40 degrees when I left the office tonight...not NC weather this time of year for sure!

I expect a busy Saturday a.m. tomorrow and am going to hit the hay early tonight...

'night all,

Dad

January Thaw...

Well, after 17 or 18 days of frigid weather down here it finally "broke" and last weekend we hit 60 degrees with sunny skies on Saturday. Crys and I went running all over (she was having a rare good couple of days in a row feeling good) and went to the Wake County Firearms range and sighted in a new AR-15 that Santa brought me. She ran the spotting scope so it went pretty efficiently. We went out for lunch, went to some friends to vaccinate a couple cats for Rabies and then went to see the Sherlock Holmes movie. That's a big weekend for us! Today it was so nice at lunch that I raised the rear hatch on my Tahoe and sat inside the rear deck for lunch! This is the way NC is supposed to be in the "winter", not frigid cold, but blue skies and 60 degrees (-:

The work week has been unbelieably busy and nothing at the office has been "easy", so tomorrow's surgery schedule for me is probably just going to be another example...and the clients are getting testier about finances as well! I guess everyone is feeling the crunch. Dr. Cupp's colon cancer rears it's ugly head once and a while with some terrible abdominal pain despite the chemotherapy and radiation. She's such a nice person and great partner...I'll miss her when she's out for her surgery in March.

Crys got her confirmation for her Criminal Justice CSI internship at the CCBI (City-County Bureau of Investigation in Raleigh) as part of her "junior" year in crimial justice. She starts around Feb. 23...I'm very proud of her for taking on a new career and working on another degree in a non-related field to veterinary technology.

Speaking of February...it looks like the presentation of my 25 year Masonic pin will be February 27. Kelly thinks she can fly down for it and arrive here the 25th or 26th to assist in the festivities. It'd be nice if Debra could be here, too, but I know that finances are "tight" for all of us and that might not be possible. I'm hoping Crys will feel up to going to the award ceremony and the 'pinning' ...I think there are several of us scheduled to get our 25 year pins. My pin from Indiana arrived in good shape according to our lodge Secretary. As Debra and Kelly may remember, when I was installed as Worshipful Master of the Fowler, Indiana lodge, they pinned my Master's Square on my lapel...some things a Dad never forgets!

Please keep Crys in your prayers as her fibromyalgia just doesn't seem to want to give in to even extreme doses of medications in combination. I hope everyone is feeling well and has avoided the flu bug or other maladies.

Love to y'all from North Carolina.

Dad

Monday, Monday...

Well, we got through the Christmas holiday with a trip to Mom Mickey's in Seven Lakes near Southern Pines. Great meal and met a couple of her neighbors who are elderly widows, but their minds were sharp as a tack. Shared in the gift-giving and garnered a beautiful new tie, Glenn Beck's book Arguing with Idiots and a neat book simply entitled Guns. As usual it rained so we couldn't see the rest of the Seven Lakes area...guess we'll save that for next time. Saturday and Sunday were beautiful, sunny days as was today. It's nice to see ole Saul in the winter and helps the doldrums.

This week Crys is house-sitting/pet-sitting for one of her favorite clients...and enjoying the benefits of multiple flat screen TVs and an absolutely lovely home. She has it tough! I miss her around the homestead, but have a lot to do before I start back to work at the hospital tomorrow.
I've planned a surprise dinner out for New Year's Eve and Crys' birthday , which is difficult since it's 1/1... so we have to stay up and watch the Acorn drop (yep, Raleigh has its Acorn, Atlanta has its Peach....and so on) in order to make the 12:21 a.m. anniversary of her birth.

This was my last day consulting for the Board. As my work is done with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board, I now I have to find something less fun to do to earn some extra sheckels that is also a diversion. I've started writing a book and that will probably take up most of any extra time until it's completed. I may be able to squeeze in some target practice with the new AR-15...hmmmm.

Here's to a great week and the coming of 2010...hope it's a good one for all our friends and family. More later...

Busy week...

After attending Lodge on Monday, A Duke basketball game (standing with the students next the the band under the basket for the entire game in Cameron Indoor Coliseum) on Tuesday night, the Rotary annual Christmas Party on Thursday evening and a lodge brother's 50th wedding anniverary party on Saturday afternoon, the North Carolina Board of Veterinary Medicine -NCVMA combined office party at the RBC Center for a hockey game on Saturday night and dear friend's Christmas party at their home on Sunday evening there is no wonder why I'm "bushed".

It's about 9 p.m. and I'm about to 'hit the hay'...this week at the office is a short week with the office closing the 24th at 2 p.m. and then opening up for Friday normal hours. It's a blessing that I'm not working next Saturday...I'm sure there will be stuff to put away and planning for New Years...after all January 1 is Crystal's birthday !

Oh, by the way, Crys got to see her parents last Monday evening and they expressed happiness at the news of her engagment although (like my girls were probably thinking ) she told Crys "I didn't think you were going to do this again"... and then gushed over Crys and her ring a little more.

So much for this edition...at least we missed the big snow storm that hit the NE and that's fine because ole NC just doesn't have the equipment for such a thing...although my Hoosier roots tingle a little and do miss the white stuff for Christmas.

More later...

Engagement has it pitfalls...

It took over 2 years to happen and then when it did the problem was notifying our loved ones in a manner that noone felt slighted or left out...how do you notify both your daughters without one feeling she wasn't "the first to know" when they are BOTH first in your heart? Ole Dad decided to use the modern version of direct communication...e-mail... and that didn't work out so good. I learned that "personal information should be shared personally (by phone when it can't be in person) and upset both my girls. Well, never let it be said that "an old dog can't learn new tricks"...so having not heard a response to my email announcement I texted them to check their e-mail boxes...that didn't work out too well either...same reason....so when I finally got together with them on the phone they were underwhelmed and left old Dad wondering... Like a lot of other fellas, my ladies mystify me and I don't pretend to understand them, but I love them with all my heart and I know in their heart-of-hearts that they are happy for Crys and me.
